The Oromo Community Organization in The Netherland expresses its deepest sorrow and condolences to the family, people and the government of the Republic of South Africa on the death of His Excellency, the former President Mr. Nelson Mandela.
On this sad occasion, our community organization and its members cherish the legacy of President Mandela whose long and distinguished struggle against Apartheid and injustice in South Africa left unparalleled influence on humanity, and lasting mark on world history.
In the long journey of President Mandela and the African National Congress to freedom and equality, the Oromo people’s genuine sons (General Tadesse Birru, Col. Fekadu Wakene, Fekadu Dibaba and Captain Guta Dinka) played significant roles by hosting Madiba in their homeland, providing him with military training and safeguarding his life at the time when the Apartheid regime plotted to assassinate him in Addis Ababa. These roles have made a meaningful and special attachment between the two nations.
As we continue to draw strength and inspiration from the struggle and legacy of history’s giant Madiba, who led his people and South Africa in the struggle of dismantling the White minority supremacy and in paving the way to democracy after 27 years of imprisonment, the Oromo people share your loss as they had experienced their own loss of the coldblooded execution of General Tadesse Birru.
The Oromo Community in the Netherlands again expresses its deepest condolence and sympathy to the family, people and government of the Republic of South Africa, and urge South Africans to uphold the ideals of Madiba and shoulder the historical burdens he bestowed upon them in fighting against injustice in all its manifestations everywhere.
May he rest in peace.
Chairman Nederland Oromo Community (HON)
