Renown Kenyan journalist Yassin Juma has appealed to the Kenyan government to remove the derogatory
“Galla” reference for the Oromo nation from Kenyan school textbooks. Yassin Juma was formerly an investigative journalist with the Kenyan media outlet NTV Kenya, and one of his acclaimed reports was on the Oromo Liberation Army.
Yassin Juma, in his blog, called the Kenyan government’s use of the derogatory
Galla to refer to the proud Oromo nation “racist and disrespect” to the Nation. The derogatory word Galla was spread to the world by racist warlords of Abyssinian monarchies over a period of 300 years, especially through the writings of the Abyssinian monk Abba Bahrey.
As of the 1974 fall of the Abyssinian Shoan monarchy, it has become illegal to use the derogatory word in Ethiopia. However, Kenya – despite being a proud home to some tribes of the Oromo in Northern Kenya, remains probably the only country in the world that continues to use the derogatory word for the Oromo nation in official texts.
It’s to be remembered that, earlier in 2014, Oromo refugees in Kenya wrote a letter to the Kenyan Education Ministry to correct the identity of the Oromo people in its textbooks.
Here’s the blog entry of journalist Yassin Juma.
STOP THE USE OF WORD “GALLA” IN KENYA SCHOOLS … ITS RACIST AND DISRESPECT TO THE OROMO NATION
There is a Swahili Proverb that goes “Mgalla Mui Lakini Haki Mpe” which translated into English means, The
Galla (may be) a killerm but he deserves to enjoy his rights. Now that is a saying that goes hundreds of years back perhaps in the 14th or 15th century
From that, we get to know that these so called
Galla people had contact with the Swahili people of the Kenya coast as early as the 14th or 15th century. They were a Cushitic race who made conquest after conquest from Ethiopia to the Kenya coast … thousands of Kilometers away. Historians say their presence at the Coast led to the fall of several Swahili city states.
So who are the
Galla, the feared conquering Cushitic race from Ethiopia?
